AMA: Tell us a little about yourself AMPED Association Management does?
I’m a marketing generalist who had a 20-year sales career before earning a marketing degree and making a career move. AMPED Association Management manages associations’ business operations (marketing, strategic and meeting planning, membership, financial, administration. We are hired by boards of directors who can then focus on their profession and industry instead.
AMA: What makes guerilla marketing so powerful for small marketing teams? Can you give us an example of what this tactic can look like in practice?
- I started with AMPED Association Management in 2015, managing a buyers guide for a client. The job included selling upgraded company profiles, SEO, paid and earned media, content marketing, product and vendor management, and membership and sponsorship development. It was a fantastic opportunity with a lot of latitude to try new things.
- I took a holistic approach in a team of one to make the website successful. I even started an interview-based podcast centered around the members of the industry. This activity finally came to a head when traffic quadrupled over three years, and I surpassed revenue goals. While I had the cooperation and support of my client team, I was the main “do-er” and ultimately accountable for the website’s success.
AMA: Can you give us a preview of one of the strategies small marketing teams can use to succeed amid high expectations and low budgets?
- This might be the most important: negotiating buy-in with leadership and your team to have a healthy amount of risk-taking is essential.
- Even though you may not be risking budget money, you may be risking your and others’ time, effort and resources.
- Done is Better than Perfect.
- Ask for forgiveness, not permission.
- You are going to fail, so fail fast. It’s part of the process, so pick yourself up and move on. Learning what doesn’t work may be just as important as learning what does.
AMA: What is the big takeaway people can expect if they attend the event?
Attendees will learn that success can come from not doing everything as a one-person or small team. They need to focus on the activities that bring the most value and bang for “no or low bucks.”
