AMA: Tell us a little about yourself and the goals of the Manufacturing Happy Hour.

A: I’m an engineer-turned-sales guy-turned-marketer that’s always had a knack for being on camera or on stage (college radio, playing in punk bands, etc.). Manufacturing Happy Hour started as a way to reach my young client base in the Bay Area and play to my strengths. I had moved from Houston, Texas, serving a more senior market. When I relocated to the Bay, decision-makers were in their 20’s and 30’s. Digital media was how they consumed content as opposed to face-to-face meetings.

I started Manufacturing Happy Hour as a video series to reach a younger audience. It grew into a podcast and community to advance the industry.

AMA: How have you used new digital marketing tools to reach prospects and expand your influence?

A: It’s a multimedia approach. My podcast hits my most dedicated audience, but that’s just the start of it. I also run an associated digital community of leaders in a LinkedIn group (called the Manufacturing Happy Hour Industry Community). It’s an amazing way to serve those in the community because the group facilitates collaborating, connecting and working with one another. Finally, the videos, short stories and images I post to social media are a great way to make a lot of impressions with a broader audience. They draw more listeners into the podcast and community.

AMA: What are the challenges and advantages of hosting Manufacturing Happy Hour?

A: Consistency is the biggest challenge. As Manufacturing Happy Hour has grown, I find myself struggling to keep up with a mix of content for podcasts, the community, virtual events and social media. It’s a great problem to have and one of the natural issues of growing and scaling. Now I just need to figure out how to outsource some of my responsibilities more effectively. Through MHH, I make human connections with a strong community in a way that most people in my industry don’t even try to do.

AMA: What is the big takeaway people can expect if they attend this live podcasting session?

A: People will walk away understanding how exponential the impact of a podcast can be when it comes to sales, marketing and business development. In addition to my 500 regular listeners, I’ve developed a broader, hyper-engaged community. Each episode is a goldmine of content that can be repurposed across social media in so many ways. With such a wide net for engagement, the relationships I’ve built from the podcast have turned into partnerships, customer relationships and friendships.
